Hong Kong

We've reached Hong Kong. The last post was actually written some time ago but couldn't get a decent internet connection to upload the pictures.

We spent almost a week in Yongshuo. It's an interesting place--a small town really, but it's full of foreigners, many of whom are teaching English at one of the several English schools located there. And many of the Chinese in town are there to study English.

It's a relaxing place. The weather was extremely cold the first few days, but warmed up towards the end of our stay and I ended up doing some hiking in the mountains on the edge of town and went on a bike ride through the countryside.

An overnight bus (the beds of course were far too short) took us to Shenzhen where we crossed the border into Hong Kong. We're staying in an apartment with Thassos from Switzerland. I've made plans to write an article about political reform in Hong Kong for an Australian magazine and, to this end, I've lined up a number of interviews with Hong Kong legislators.

Quite by coincidence, we're in town at the same time as the WTO Ministerial Conference. Tomorrow I may go watch one of the marches planned by the anti-WTO protestors and in the afternoon Joseph Stiglitz is giving a talk which I may try to attend.
